Trego anticipated tough competition in the State tournament in Ell-Saline on February 11, and the scholars’ bowl team found it.

Trego finished third in the state competition. Inman placed first, and Kansas City Christian placed second.

The Golden Eagles went 4-1 in the first round of pool play, with wins over Leavenworth-Immaculata, 50-25; Oberlin, 90-30; Onaga, 60-40; and Ellinwood, 80-10. Still qualifying for the finals, Trego suffered their only loss against Eskridge-Mission Valley, 30-50.

To start off the finals competitions, Trego defeated Inman, who went on to win the tournament. In the second round, Trego struggled against Oberlin, who defeated the Golden Eagles, 35-60. Trego came back to defeat Jefferson County in a decisive 50-5 win, before they defeated Immaculata, 45-20. Unfortunately, the most important match of the day went to Kansas City Christian, who defeated Trego, 40-80.

Members of the team included Joe Wolf, Deven Schoenthaler, Blake Huxman, Kristen Hanks, Tabitha Wolf and Tyler Lowry.

Coach Dawn Kenyon commented about the State event.

“Trego was well represented at the State tournament. We have some intelligent kids. We competed well and even gave ourselves a chance to be state champions.

“I am very proud of all six members and their performances. They made the season successful. Deven and Joe should have great memories of their final year of scholars’ bowl.”
