In Norton’s 15-team pool play tournament, the Golden Eagles finished second in their pool, beating Norton II, Oberlin, Osborne, Northern Valley, and Smith Center. Trego fell to TMP in regular pool play, 40-70.
Advancing to semifinals, Trego went up against Hays High. The Golden Eagles kept a 55-10 lead, but then the Indians answered five of the final six questions to steal the match, which put Trego in contention for third against TMP, who had beaten the Eagles in their three previous meetings. Of course, Trego wanted that win.
The Golden Eagles felt the pressure. TMP answered the first question, but Trego snagged the next three questions, which provided the momentum for Trego to go on to beat the Monarchs, 60-40.
Coach Dawn Kenyon reminded the Golden Eagles to focus on the questions before the third place victory.
“You need to forget about who you’re playing and just play.”
Trego’s scholars’ bowl fate will be decided today at the Sublette-sponsored 2A Regional Tournament.
