Hoping to inspire a desire for cross country and running, high school cross country runners hosted a three-day camp at the Big Creek Golf Course for K-12 youngsters on October 10-12.

Future cross country runners attend camp

By Salena Gano
The cross country team hosted a Little Eagle Cross Country Camp at the Big Creek Golf Course on October 10-12.

On Monday, under the watchful eyes of cross country runners, Brad Pfannenstiel, Lexi Riedel, Salena Gano, and Sierra Swart, 18 little runners were divided into teams and ran to designated greens where they had putting contests.

The next day, 17 little runners participated in a “marker clue run.” Their high school mentors once again divided the youngsters into teams before they figured out clues to find out where they needed to run. Once they arrived at several designated areas, they used color markers to create art on their shirts to say something positive about cross country or running.

On the last day of camp, 21 little eagle cross country runners stepped up to the starting line and ran a “mini cross country race” on the golf course. All the athletes received medals for their hard work and effort.

Coach Pfannenstiel commented about the camp.

“As a coach I was very proud of how the TCHS cross country athletes worked with these future cross country runners. To see these young men and women step up and be leaders to these young athletes was inspiring. I was also very impressed with all of the Little Eagle Runners who participated in our camp.”

The cross country team plans to host a camp again next fall.

Ogallah XC tradition continues

Three cross country members and coach made a 9.25 mile run to Ogallah on October 1. The annual run provided challenge and reward for the participants.

Once again, the tradition continued as the TCHS cross-country team hit the road to run to Ogallah on October 1.

The Golden Eagle team met at 9:00 a.m. at the swimming pool park for the longest run of the season----9.25 miles. Determined to accomplish the task of running to Ogallah, three of the five runners on the team and Coach Gayle Pfannensiel gave up their Saturday morning sleep in, watch cartoons and eat donuts to run the stretch between WaKeeney and Ogallah on Old Highway 40. With encouragement and support from Travis Flax, who provided water to the runners and took photos to document the adventure, the team ran the distance and then celebrated the run’s completion with a breakfast, provided by the generosity of Robert and Vicki Doxon at their home in Ogallah.

The XC runners completing the distance shared their personal thoughts about this running experience.

Salena Gano said, “Running to Ogallah was very physically tough, but we were mentally tough and went the whole way. It was very cool to be able to say ‘I ran to Ogallah.’ It was a great day for cross country runners.”

“It was a challenging but fun run. In the end it felt good to be able to say I ran to Ogallah,” said Sierra Swart.

“It is a good challenge to complete the run. Sometimes it would be easy to stop and hop in the truck, but then it would be like quitting. You feel better about yourself when you are done when you know you have run the entire distance,” said Brad Pfannenstiel.

Coach Pfannenstiel viewed the run’s success as a precursor to greater things.

“I was very proud of the Trego cross country runners. It takes a lot of hard work, concentration, and perseverance to complete a 9.25 mile run. These runners proved that they are able to do all three. Applying these skills outside of running, these young men and women should be able to accomplish anything they put their minds to.”
