Doubles team medals at State
Three girls traveled to compete in the State tennis tournament in Dodge City on October 14-15.
Amelia Fabrizius and Leah Flax finished the State Tournament with a 4-1record. The team received a first round bye, due to their 1st place finish at their Regional tournament. They then played a Conway Springs team and won.
Next, the girls had to face Claflin; the team took a “hard loss” from Claflin in two sets.
Fabrizius and Flax then went to the backside of the bracket. The girls came back to beat Tribune, Anthony-Harper Chaparral, and Hillsboro. The team won the backside, which gave them a 5th-place finish and a 33-6 overall record.
Alli Carr also competed. Carr was beat out due to her losses to Lyons and PVKC.
Trego, as a team, received 9th place, with 11 points out of 24 teams. Ellinwood took the team title with 30.5 points.
Coach Sheryl Hillman commented about the girls’ performances.
“I am so proud of all three of the girls. They represented TCHS very well in play and in conduct.
“The doubles team, earlier in the season, had a goal of placing top eight at State, but as the season progressed, they set their goal to the top four instead. The team played Claflin in the quarter finals, a team we were 1-2 with. We knew it would be a very close match. The girls settled in and played better their second set against Claflin but came up just short of splitting sets with them. That was a hard loss for our girls, but they had the evening to regroup, knowing that they had to come out fighting for the next three matches to earn 5th place. Fight they did. Tribune came out playing the best they have ever played us, running down every point, but patience and determination prevailed, and we beat Tribune, 9-6. The next two matches were not nearly as intense, but they girls still dominated on the court.
“I’m so proud of how the girls managed to stay in the game – never having a melt down on the court but kept fighting for their goal.”
