Cheerleading squad for 2008-2009 announced

By Stephanie Griffith
The tryouts for the 2008-2009 cheerleading squad are complete.

Next year’s squad will include Brooke S., Kelsey H., Cala Nowlin, Jessica S., Stephanie Griffith, Kayla H. and Kylie D.

The girls met certain criteria before they were named to the team. They were all given a study guide over the sports that they are required to cheer for, as well as cheerleading rules and requirements.  The written test was on Thursday morning, April 10, and the potential cheerleaders had to pass this test with a score of at least 80%.  Tryouts took place on Wednesday, April 16. A composite score of 80% was required for a candidate to make the squad.

At tryouts, the girls performed two chants as a large group in front of the panel of judges. They were each then required to perform a cheer individually in front of the judges. Jumps were also required, along with a stunt for extra credit.

Cheer Sponsor Nicole Mattheyer commented about tryouts.

“I am very pleased with the results.  I think that they are a very talented group of young ladies, and I am looking forward to working with them.  I was hoping for more girls next year, but I feel like we are building the program back up, and in a few years, the numbers will be back around 10 or 12.”
